Aaron + JoAnna above the river.

Four Mounds sits on a bluff over the Mississippi — a historic Dubuque estate where prairie, woodland, and river views meet. Aaron and JoAnna's day had big skies, honest light, and room to breathe.

Eastern Iowa hides some remarkable places to be married, and the Four Mounds estate is one of its best-kept secrets. The 1908 grand house anchors the property, but the river does the real work — every portrait of Aaron and JoAnna carries that long view over the Mississippi valley.

Their day moved outdoors the way this place wants to: ceremony on the lawn with the bluff falling away behind, cocktail hour drifting toward the overlook, and an evening that came in low and warm across the prairie grass.

JoAnna said it best afterward: “I am blown away with your perspective. Such beauty in our day.”

The view

The bluff overlook is the signature frame — plan ten minutes there near sunset. The river valley holds soft light well after the sun drops below the tree line.

The grounds

Prairie edges, woodland paths, and the historic house's stone details give three distinct looks within a short walk.

Getting married in Dubuque?

I photograph across Eastern Iowa — Dubuque, Galena, and the river towns between. If Four Mounds or anywhere on the river is your place, let's talk.
